Adult Swimming Lessons for Nervous Swimmers & Aquaphobia

Calm, supportive adult swimming lessons in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire & South Yorkshire

If getting in a pool makes you feel anxious, panicky or out of control, you’re not alone

I’m Angie Pond, an adult swim coach specialising in nervous swimmers and aquaphobia. My sessions are calm, practical and completely judgement-free, with a gentle step-by-step approach that helps you build confidence, breathing control and real swimming ability.

Book your induction and we’ll create a plan that fits you.

Depending on where you’re starting from, clients often notice changes quickly, not just in technique, but in how they feel.

You’ll build:

  • Confidence putting your face in the water

  • Calm, steady breathing

  • Better body position and movement

  • Trust in yourself (and your ability to stay safe)

  • A clear path forward, one step at a time

Who I Help

This is for you if you're...

  • A complete non-swimmer who wants to learn from the beginning

  • A nervous swimmer who panics in deeper water

  • Someone with a past experience or trauma around water

  • An adult who can “get by” but wants to feel confident and in control

  • Ready to learn in a calm, supportive environment

What makes my approach different?

You don’t need pushing. You need to feel safe.

My approach is gentle, structured and adult-focused. We take things step by step, at a pace that works for you, building trust, control and confidence first, then technique.

You can expect:

  • A calm, supportive pace (no being thrown in at the deep end ever)

  • Clear steps so you always know what we’re doing and why

  • Practical breathing support to help you stay steady in the water

  • A focus on safety, control and confidence, rather then technique

Build a half day with 10 - 15min treatments or stretch it into a full day — your choice.

The programme I use

I work with the Institute of Aquaphobia (IOA) 12-Step ALP programme.

It’s a proven, progressive method designed specifically for adults who feel fearful or unsafe in water. It gives you a clear pathway, so you’re never guessing what comes next.

Lessons

Before any pool sessions, you’ll book a short induction, after which I offer 121 or group lessons. Not sure which is right for you? Get in touch and tell me what you need. I’ll help you choose the best starting point.

Induction (Required)

Before any pool sessions, you’ll book a short induction. This sessions is out of the pool and lasts 30 minutes.

This is where we:

  • Talk through your experience and what’s been getting in the way

  • Identify what you need to feel safe

  • Go through simple breathing tools to reduce panic

  • Explain how lessons will work and what progress can look like

  • Make a plan for your next steps (group or 1–1)

1 to 1 lessons

If you want private support, faster progression, or you have specific fears to work through, 1–1 lessons are a great fit.

I offer 1-1 lessons based at:

  • Clowne (Go Active The Arc)

    1 Hour - £55
    30 minutes - £30

Plus the centre entrance fee (paid to the venue)

  • Worksop College
    1 hour - £60

Group lessons

Group lessons are ideal if you want a steady progression and you like the idea of learning alongside others who “get it”.

These lessons are in small groups with a calm, adult-focused environment.

I offer group lessons based at:

  • Edwinstowe (South Forest Complex)

    £25 per session

  • Worksop College
    £25 per session

FAQs

“I’m embarrassed — I should be able to do this by now.”

You’re not alone. Adults learn differently, and fear is not a character flaw. You’ll be met with respect and support from the first conversation.

“What if I panic?”

That’s exactly what we plan for. You’ll learn practical tools to steady your breathing, and we’ll move at a pace that keeps you feeling safe.

“Do I have to go in the deep end?”

No. We build confidence gradually. You stay in control.

“How long will it take?”

It depends on your starting point and your goals. We’ll talk honestly about what’s realistic for you during your induction.

Ready to start?

1) Book your induction

This is the first step for everyone, and it’s designed to help you feel clearer, calmer and supported.

2) Get in touch to discuss what you need

If you’re unsure whether group or 1–1 is right, send me a message and tell me:

- Where you’d like to swim (Edwinstowe, Worksop, or Clowne)

- Your current comfort level

- Your goal (learn from scratch, build confidence, improve technique)

Book your induction here or get in touch and we’ll take this one step at a time.
